There were several reasons we finally decided on Cisswood house, firstly they offered us a large discount because we were booking a wedding reception just a few months in advance, during a quieter part of the year (October), and secondly because the in-house wedding coordinators Nicky and Jane really went out of their way to furnish us with the information we needed. They sat us down and went through things with us in detail and although we had a lot of questions and requirements, they never once made us feel like we were taking up too much of their time. At some other venues we visited, it was hard to find the right person to talk to, let alone sit down with them and talk in detail about what we wanted.

The planning of our wedding reception seemed incredibly simple, we had an initial talk with Nicky and Jane and let them know what we wanted. We then had a couple of months to decide on menus and give them our final guest numbers. We were invited along to a wedding fayre they had a couple of months before our wedding, so we went along, sipped sparkling wine and enjoyed some tasty Canapés whilst getting a preview of what Cisswood House has to offer. I recommend popping along to the wedding fayres at Cisswood house if you are getting married in the local area because they do look after you and they have a few local wedding suppliers showing their products and services.

The planning stages of our wedding reception went without a hitch, apart from Cisswood insisting that the Band we had organised to play at our reception have public liability insurance, which they didn’t have as they usually only play pubs and bars. We had to buy the band insurance in the end. That said, I can’t criticise Cisswood House for that because pretty much all wedding venues would have asked for the band to have public liability insurance.

When the day arrived, my wife and I got married in front of our friends and family at Horsham Unitarian church and then made our way to Cisswood House in a Beautiful white 1966 Vanden Plas Princess, provided and driven by Crawley based Bowfield hire. Upon our arrival we had a few photos taken by the car and were then greeted by a member of the Cisswood House staff with a well needed glass of bubbly. For the next half an hour we talked with our guests in the hotel bar a lobby whilst we waited to be ushered into the function room.

I had already seen what the function room looked like all dressed and decorated because I had been to the hotel the day before to take the cupcakes and some of the decorations. I really liked that we were able to provide our own table decorations, flowers, favours etc, but the Cisswood house team put it all together for us on the morning of the wedding. This is probably in common with most wedding venues, but I really liked how Cisswood had made the room look absolutely how we wanted it to be.

After our guests had been allowed into the room, the duty manager, acting as our toastmaster, announced my wife and I, and we walked into the function room to applause from our friends and family. My wife was seeing the room dressed and decorated for the first time, and because it was her who had chosen the flowers, decorations, favours etc, I was little worried how she would like it, but judging by her reaction and things she has said since, I think she was as pleased with it as I was.

Above you can see how we had decorated the tables. We were on a tight budget so we left things fairly simple, and no chair covers because I personally don’t like them. Much of the the decoration was thanks to my wife and her favourite shop, Hobbycraft.

We then did the speeches, and got down to some serious eating and drinking. We had sparkling wine and some soft drinks when our guests arrived at the venue, and a few bottles of wine on each table in the function room. The function room also has a bar which was open (and busy) from the moment we were allowed in, which I was very pleased about.

My wife and I were getting married quite late in the day, so we decided not to have to have a Buffet instead of a three course sit down meal, we knew our guests would be very hungry and we thought a Buffet would allow people to eat as much as they like, and probably get their food a bit quicker. A buffet was also a cheaper option for us, which was great. We did however decide to have a sit down dessert served by the Cisswood waiting staff.

I was worried when we booked the Buffet that we had not ordered enough food, and I imagined that the quantity per item we ordered for the buffet would be quite small. I could not have been more wrong, not only was there more than enough food to go round, the food was amazing. We had many positive comments from our guests about the buffet, I can’t remember anyone having anything negative to say. The one and only comment I would have about the buffet is that the waiting staff did not add new clean plates when they ran out, and were very keen to clear dirty plates, leaving some people who wanted to go up for more food without plate. I spoke to the duty manager about this and he had more plates brought out immediately. Oh, and if I could go back I wouldn’t order the cheese platter because most guests just don’t want to have to cut portions off big blocks of cheese when there is a large queue of people behind them. I think they should bring the cheese out already cut. The Buffet on the whole was the best I have ever had.

The night went without a hitch and everyone really enjoyed them self, we had great food and plenty of drinks, a great band and a great team of staff looking after us.

We and a few of our guests spent the night at the Hotel which was brilliant because we could enjoy breakfast with close family and friends. My wife and I had been given a complimentary room, and our guests and discounted room rate. The breakfast was great and plentiful, I loved the Danish pastries, and the sausages are amazing. We even had a swim in the hotel pool before leaving the hotel to start our married life.

I would, without question, recommend Cisswood house to anyone getting married in the area.
