Tying the knot abroad continues to be a popular choice for people who want make a break from tradition for their big day. When it comes to weddings abroad, there is now more choice than ever. So where do you start? The following counts down some of the current hot destinations for a dream wedding:
5. Cyprus
Cyprus is a popular destination for a reasonably budgeted, fuss free wedding which doesn’t scrimp on the scenery. All wedding paperwork is in English and there is no minimum stay in the country prior to the wedding, meaning that the wedding and honeymoon can be planned in the same week. Many companies offer all inclusive wedding packages which include flights, accommodation and a beach side ceremony.
4. Sorrento
Set on the high cliffs of the Amalfi coast, Sorrento has long been considered one of the most glamorous destinations in Italy, with amazing views of the Mediterranean and the isle of Capri. As for the ceremony itself, there are a range of options, but top of the list must be Saint Francesco’s, an ancient medieval cloister, complete with gothic arches and flowering plants.
3. New York
The Big Apple might not top many people’s lists when they are thinking about the setting for their wedding, but New York is becoming increasingly popular. Central Park, in the heart of Manhattan offers a beautiful, romantic location overlooking the lake. It’s the city that doesn’t sleep, providing everything you could wish for in terms of food, accommodation and glorious skylines (not to mention shopping for the bride!)
2. Slovenia
Where? Mountainous Slovenia borders Hungary, Italy, Croatia and Austria, with a population of just over two million people. Historic Ljubljana is the capital, but many couples travel the 55 km to Lake Bled, a picturesque lake at the foot of the Triglav Mountains. In the centre of the lake is Bled Island (the only island in the country) which is home to the Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary, where weddings are held regularly. The tradition is for the groom to carry the bride up the 99 steps from the lakeside to the church.
1. Sri Lanka
For a completely different wedding experience, Sri Lanka is hard to beat. Where else can the bride and groom ride off to start their life together on the back of an elephant? Sri Lankan beaches are second to none and moonlit beach ceremonies are becoming increasingly popular. Many operators offer packages which can include the ceremony, the honeymoon and options such as sung blessings, boat rides and massages.
